THE NORTHERN EXPLORER 

DAY 1 ARRIVE JOHANNESBURG: You will be met at the airport in Johannesburg and head straight for Africa Sky Guest House.

DAY 2 TIMBAVATI: Head for the Timbavati Private Reserve, comprising of private land adjoining Kruger National Park.  The Timbavati uses open safari vehicles and allows you to go off road to game view - ensuring the best possible opportunities for sightings of the Big 5.

DAY 3 TIMBAVATI:  Sightings are close, as 4x4 game viewers go off road.  Join rangers on a bush walk.  A highlight is the sunset drives.

DAY 4 MAPUNGUBWE: Cross the Tropic of Capricorn and arrive at Mopane Bush Lodge, located on the 6000ha Mapesu Nature Reserve, a safe environment for walking and considered one of the best birding areas in South Africa - or just relax in the pool before dinner…

DAY 5 MAPUNGUBWE: Visit Mapungubwe National Park, a UNESCO World heritage Site.  Mapungubwe Hill is the site of the first African Kingdom which reached its climax in the 13th century, predating the Great Zimbabwe Ruins!

DAY 6 MATOBO NATIONAL PARK:  Enter Zimbabwe ant travel north to Matobo National Park and World Heritage Site.  Matobo Hills are a chaotic creation of rocks - the most spectacular granite landscape in the world.   

DAY 7 MATOBO NATIONAL PARK:  Visit World's View.  Cecil John Rhodes visited various sites in the Matobo Hills andthis was to be his burial place.  In the afternoon, view black and white rhino, amongs a variety of plains game.  Matobo boasts one of the highest concentrations of birds of prey in the world.

DAY 8 HWANGE NATIONAL PARK:   Hwange is protected by Matabele royal decree.  Over 100 species of mammal can be seen here - including the Presidential Elephants which often drink at Ivory Lodge's exclusive water hole.  Depart on an afternoon game drive.

DAY 9 HWANGE NATIONAL PARK:  After an early morning game drive or guided safari walk, with the day at leisure relaxing in the beautiful Ivory Lodge.  End the day with another afternoon game drive.

DAY 10 VICTORIA FALLS:   Book into Victoria Falls Hotel, known as the "grand old lady of the falls" - a luxurious 5-star hotel on a World Heritage site overlooking the Falls.  In the afternoon go for a walk to view the smoke that thunders. Although neither the highest nor widest, this is the largest sheet of falling water in the world.  In the evening enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

DAY 11 VICTORIA FALLS: Today you have quite a few options to choose from! Book from a selection of Flight of Angels, Walk with Lions, Elephant Back Safari and many more…….

OPTIONAL ADD ON - 1 NIGHT CHOBE:  Day visit to Chobe National Park in Botswana.  Chobe is home to one of the largest game concentrations in Africa.  A cruise on the Chobe River followed by a game drive in the National Park, with a break inbetween to enjoy a gourmet lunch at a stylish restaurant overlooking the river.  2 people R6 900 pp, 4 people R5 900 pp, 6 people R5 600 pp

DAY 12 CAPRIVI STRIP:  Enter Namibia and the Caprivi, a narrow strip of land in the far northeast of Namibia.  There are no fences, so the animals can roam freely across the borders of the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zambia. In the evening, enjoy a scenic sunset cruise.

DAY 13 CAPRIVI STRIP: Set off on a morning game in open safari vehicle into Mudumu Game Parks.  In the afternoon, enjoy a scenic sunset cruise.

OPTIONAL ADD ON - 2 NIGHT OKAVANGO HOUSEBOAT:  Spend 2 nights on Kabbo on the serene waters of the Okavango River.  The Houseboat operates in the "Panhandle" area of the Okavango Delta, recognised as being the quietest and most peaceful in the Delta, due to its remoteness.  Enjoy excursions on tender boats to explore the myriad of smaller channels.  2 people R9 600 pp, 4 people R8 200 pp, 6 people R8 000 pp

DAY 14  RUNDU: After breakfast head west, along the Okavango River and Angolan border, to the riverside town of Rundu on the banks of the Okavango River.

DAY 15 ETOSHA: Visit the Hoba Meteorite - largest known meteorite and most massive naturally-occurring piece of iron known at the Earth's surface.  Continue on to Etosha National Park and spend the night on the eastern boundary of the park.

DAY 16 + 17 ETOSHA: A visit to Etosha Park is a highlight of Namibia. Etosha covers an area of more than 22 000-square kms. The pan is just about always dry. Be it lion or elephant, giraffe or zebra; almost all African animal species are represented in the huge nature reserve.

DAY 18  OKONJIMA:  Visit the home of the Africat Foundation.  Set off on an afternoon drive to radio-track leopards.  The leopards roam freely and catch their own prey within the 4500ha private rehabiliation area.  After dinner, visit the nocturnal hide where you may vew nightlife such as porcupine, honey-badgers and caracal.

OPTIONAL ADD ON - 2 NIGHT SWAKOPMUND:   Swakopmund is a melting pot of Bohemian and Bavarian.  The drive there is interesting, as the scenery levels out to sand and dunes, with excellent photo and curio stops en route.  In Swakopmund there is an option of either a Living Desert Tour to explore the Namib Desert, or a Seal and Dolphin Cruise.  There is also time to explore the town on foot and go "flightseeing" overt he famous dunes of Sossusvlei - a bird's eyeview of one of the most amazing sights in Namibia.  2 people R6 100 pp, 4 people R4 450 pp, 6 people R3 970 pp

DAY 19 DEPART WINDHOEK:  Head inland to the capital of Namibia, Windhoek.  Here your guide bids you farewell as you depart on a late afternoon flight to Cape Town or Johannesburg.
